Information below was from a publication from the Triangle Foundation/Equality Michigan.
File under: Security
Purpose: For the advancement of awareness and promotion of tolerance:
• Take a self-defense class. Be able to defend yourself in the event of a bias-motivated attack.
• Understand the environment around you.
• Walk with friends. Never walk alone.
• Be proud, but understand that not everyone will accept you or agree with you.
• Park your vehicle close to your destination.
• Always hold your drink. Never leave your drink unattended.
• Pour your own drink. Don’t accept drinks from others.
• If you are meeting someone new, meet them in a public place.
• Inform your friends on where you’re going if you’re meeting someone.
• Inform your friends on when you’ll be back from meeting someone.
• Inform your friends on identifying information when meeting someone new.
• Contact TEAM if you experience rape, harassment, and threats.
• Contact TEAM if you are the victim of a bias-motivated crime, or hate crime.
• Contact emergency authorities first if you are the victim of a bias-motivated crime. Bias-motivated crimes are a federal offense punishable with up to a life-term prison sentence. Bias-motivated crimes are a form of domestic terrorism.
As always, TEAM respects your privacy in all issues.
Best Wishes,
